Slag cement is ground granulated blast furnace slag, GGBFS for short. When iron is made in a blast furnace, the molten slag that floats off the iron is quenched in water into glassy granules, then dried and ground as fine as cement. The result is a powder that wants to become cement but needs a nudge: mix it with portland cement or lime and it reacts to form the same strength-giving compounds, slowly and for a long time. Slag cement is graded under ASTM C989 by how much strength it develops against a straight portland control.
The workhorse grade and the one on TxDOT's list. At 28 days a 50 percent slag mix reaches at least 95 percent of the strength of the straight portland control, and usually passes it. This is what we supply.
Finer grind, faster strength gain, higher price. Specified where early strength matters or where the mix is pushing high replacement levels. Ask if your spec calls for it and we will tell you what is available.
Two numbers matter more than the grade on the truck. Fineness, reported as percent retained on the No. 325 sieve, is where the reactivity lives, and a coarse slag is a much worse product that looks identical in the silo. Sulfate, reported as SO3, matters on any job in contact with sulfate-bearing soil or water. Ask for both on the mill certificate. We will send it with the quote.
Slag cement moves in this market for four reasons:
TxDOT Item 421 allows 35 to 50 percent of the cement to be replaced with slag cement. Commercial mixes commonly run 25 to 50 percent. Lower cost per yard, lower heat, a lighter color, and the same or better 28-day strength.
Foundations, mats, drilled shafts and anything thick enough to crack from its own heat. TxDOT allows up to 70 percent slag replacement in mass placements because slag cuts heat of hydration hard. Houston's industrial and petrochemical work lives here.
Slag consumes the free lime that sulfate attacks and tightens the pore structure against chloride. For marine, coastal and below-grade work along the Gulf Coast, that is often the reason it is in the spec.

A word on supply: Houston is the slag cement hub for Texas. The state's grinding plants and import terminals are all here on the Ship Channel, and everything sold in Dallas, Austin or San Antonio leaves from Houston by truck or rail. That makes Houston buyers first in line, but it also means Houston allocation gets tight when a big paving or industrial pour ramps up. If your schedule is fixed, lock volume early.

Both are supplementary cementitious materials and both cut cost and heat. Slag is finer, more reactive, and gives higher late strength and better sulfate resistance. Class C fly ash sets faster and dries wet material. Many mixes use both. We supply both, so the honest answer depends on your spec and your schedule, and we will tell you which.
With lime, yes. TxDOT research on high-sulfate soils found that 5 percent slag cement with 1 percent lime controlled swell where lime alone caused heave. Slag needs the lime to activate; it is not a stand-alone soil stabilizer. Details at slaglimestabilization.com.
